Romanian court rules Turkish woman must stay under arrest
A Romanian court has ruled that a Turkish woman wanted in Turkey on alleged links to militants must remain in custody until her extradition hearing.
Nalan Oral, who has political refugee status in Belgium, was detained by Romanian border guards on July 8. Her lawyer Alin Speriusi-Vlad told the Associated Press on July 17 she was detained because her name appeared on an Interpol list.
Eleusis named Capital Culture of Europe for 2021
The town of Eleusis in west Attica has officially been named cultural capital of Europe for 2021. The announcement was made by the European Parliament, which approved the list of countries with 606 votes form, 54 against and 6 abstentions, that will host the cultural capitals from 2021 to 2023.

Plan to build Belgrade-Timisoara highway abandoned
Romania and Serbia have given up the project of "linking their capitals with a highway," says Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu.
Grindeanu told the Romanian website Digi24 that Serbian authorities are no longer willing to support the project.

Mathematician set to become Romania's new PM
Romania's president has nominated Sorin Grindeanu from the ruling Social Democrat party (PSD) as the country's prime minister.
It is expected that the 43-year-old, a mathematician who in the past served as deputy mayor of Timisoara, will be elected in parliament next week, Reuters has reported.

Novi Sad named European Capital of Culture for 2021
BRUSSELS - Novi Sad has been named one of the three European Capitals of Culture for 2021.
Novi Sad and Timisoara, Romania, will in November be joined by a city in Greece - Eleusis, Kalamata or Rhodes.
Novi Sad beat Montenegro's Herceg Novi in the final selection round, becoming the first city from a non-EU country to take the prestigious title.
