NATO shows support for migrant naval operation in Aegean: US
NATO is willing to support a German, Greek and Turkish request for help in monitoring Turkey's Aegean Sea coast for migrant smugglers, Pentagon chief Ashton Carter said Feb. 11.
"NATO and all the parties at the table this morning indicated a willingness for NATO to support and be a part of that operation," Carter said at the 28-nation alliance's headquarters in Brussels.
EU says ‘Yes’ to NATO migrant patrols in Aegean Sea
The EU said it would welcome any assistance in dealing with the refugee crisis referring to NATO’s involvement, European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas stated in a news briefing.
“Of course it is for NATO to take a decision on the opportunity and modalities of the eventual involvement,” Mr. Schinas said.
Greece offers to send migrants directly back to Turkey via Aegean Sea
Greece's defense minister has said he wants an agreement with neighboring Turkey that would allow the European Union's Frontex border agency to stop and turn back - within Turkish waters - boats carrying migrants to the Greek islands.
33 dead in the Aegean Sea after two boats capsize
At least 33 people have drowned after two boats carrying refuges and migrants, including many children, capsized in the Aegean Sea.
Anadolu and Dogan news agencies reported that 22 people died close to the Greek island of Lesvos.
As a Turkish official told Reuters, the people on the boats were trying to reach a Greek island.
