After a traumatic summer, the government staff is working with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to develop measures to better protect the country from devastating wildfires.

The large wildfire in Aspropyrgos, western Greece, reached the perimeter of the Hellenic Air Force's 112 Combat Wing at Elefsina Air Base earlier on Tuesday but was quickly stopped, Greek media reported.

Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos expressed gratitude to Greece and his Greek counterpart George Gerapetritis for their swift response to Cyprus' request for assistance in combating a wildfire in the mountains of Limassol.

Greece on Monday dispatched two Canadair fire-fighting aircraft after a call for assistance from fellow European Union member Cyprus to help fight a blaze that has scorched miles of mountainous terrain.

Parliament President Constantinos Tasoulas on Thursday announced that the Hellenic Parliament will offer support to the unborn child of fallen air force pilot Christos Moulas, who was killed in the line of duty when his Canadair firefighting plane crashed during efforts to extinguish the wildfire at Karystos on Evia.

US State Secretary Antony Blinken expressed his condolences to Greece over the deaths of two Canadair pilots who died after their plane crashed on the island of Evia, during a firefighting operation. 

A search and rescue operation is underway for two airmen on the island of Evia after their Canadair firefighting aircraft crashed while battling the wildfire that is raging in the southern part of the island.

Ljubljana – Dnevnik newspaper says in Saturday’s commentary Attack from Air the Only Option that Slovenia urgently needs an aircraft to fight wildfires, stressing that climate change is here and dry summers are no longer in some distant future.

Koper – A fire that broke out last night under Socerb hill in a hard-to-access area near the border with Italy, south-east of Trieste, has not yet been contained, with a strong bora wind spreading it downhill towards the villages of Osp in Slovenia and Prebenico in Italy. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
