Delo berates Janša over Iran comments

Ljubljana – The newspaper Delo criticises Prime Minister Janez Janša over his call for an independent inquiry into the 1988 massacre in Iran, writing in Tuesday’s front-page commentary that the timing and the manner were ill-chosen, and suggesting Janša lacks the credibility to defend human rights elsewhere.

National school-leaving exam results best in three years

Ljubljana – A total of 5,461 final-year secondary school students or some 97% passed the national school-leaving exam, known as the matura exam, up from 94% last year and 95% in the pre-distance learning year of 2019. All points in the exam were scored by 15 students, whereas 10 Slovenian students bagged all points in the international matura.

Fortenova increases its share in Mercator to 89.11%

Ljubljana/Zagreb – Croatia’s Fortenova Group increased its share in Slovenian retail group Mercator from 88.1% to 89.11% during a takeover bid for the remaining 724,764 Mercator shares Fortenova does not already own. A total of 154 Mercator shareholders accepted Fortenova’s offer of EUR 36 per share in cash.

No parliament debate on opposition Left’s political programme

Ljubljana – Speaker Igor Zorčič will not call a plenary session to debate the opposition Left’s party programme after the coalition Democrats (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi) requested this last week, arguing the programme contained elements suggesting the Left could act against the country’s constitutional order.

Govt could annul procedure to pick delegated prosecutors

Ljubljana/Brdo pri Kranju – The government could vote on a proposal to annul the procedure to appoint Slovenia’s two European delegated prosecutors on Thursday and then publish a new call for applications, media have reported. PM Janez Janša said the government would check the appointment procedure Thursday to decide whether to proceed with it or repeat it.

Fortenova publishes takeover bid for remaining Mercator shares

Ljubljana – Fortenova, a group based in Croatia’s Zagreb, published on Wednesday a takeover bid for the remaining 724,764 shares of Slovenian retail group Mercator it does not already own. It is offering to pay EUR 36 per share in cash.

The bid is open for 29 days, that is until 23 June, unless it is extended, the group said in the Slovenian newspaper Delo on Wednesday.
