Mitsotakis: Same-sex marriage bill will include adoption rights, no surrogacy

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Wednesday a government bill legalizing same-sex marriage will extend parental rights to couples, but will not allow for medically assisted reproduction through a surrogate mother. 

"Already 20 countries in Europe have legislated marriage equality, we are not reinventing the wheel," he told state-run broadcaster ERT.

Strong rains, winds topple trees; shipping affected

The strong rains and winds across several parts of Greece felled trees and caused power outages.

Among the hardest hit areas were some of Athens' northern suburbs.

In the municipality of Filothei-Psychiko more than 40 trees were toppled and some streets remain closed to traffic, state broadcaster ERT reported.

Shipwreck with 21 migrants off Rhodes, rescue operation under way

A shipwreck with 21 migrants occurred off the coast of Rhodes in Turkish territorial waters in the early hours of Saturday. 

Three people are missing, as reported by Greek state broadcaster ERT. 

The Turkish Coast Guard rescued 18 individuals. Joint efforts with the Greek Coast Guard are underway to locate the missing three.

Man remanded on charges of killing father

A 35-year-old man arrested on New Year's Eve for fatally stabbing his 62-year-old father in their home in Peristeri, western Athens, has been remanded in custody after appearing before an investigative magistrate.

The suspect was accompanied by his mother, his sister and a friend as he arrived to respond to charges of intentional manslaughter, and carrying and using a weapon.

Blinken’s visit to Greece confirmed

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is to visit the Middle East and Europe from Friday in his fourth trip to the region since the Hamas attacks, as announced by the Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller late Thursday.

Blinken is expected to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Saturday afternoon at Hania, Crete.

Athens pet shop burns down 

A pet shop in the western Athenian district of Korydallos was destroyed after a blaze broke out early Thursday morning.

Four fire engines with 12 crew members arrived at the scene and put out the flames after an hour, state-run broadcaster ERT said. Firefighters evacuated the residents of two apartments located above the store as the fire threatened to expand to the upper floors.
