ATHEX: Banks advance as other blue chips decline

The rise recorded by Greek bank stocks on Wednesday was largely offset by the decline of most non-bank blue chips, leaving the benchmark of the Athens bourse virtually unchanged and the stock board split between winners and losers. However, market observers were quite encouraged by the improvement in trading volume.

ATHEX: Index jumps to highest point since last June

Unfazed by the decline in bank stocks, the benchmark of the Greek bourse not only held its ground on Tuesday but also climbed to a fresh nine-month high - a level not seen since June 25, 2018. The day started with losses across the board, but most stocks switched from losses to gains as the session went on.

However, non-bank blue chips managed to push the benchmark into positive territory at the end of the session despite the bank sector slump.
