Turkey suspends conscription, military discharge for six months due to outbreak

A presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on April 17 extended the conscription of approximately 66,000 soldiers for one month in order to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak in the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK).

The military postponed the mandatory conscription of 53,000 people for at least one month. The decisions will be re-examined after one month.

Transport minister removed from post

Turkey's Transport and Infrastructure Minister has been removed from his post by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, according to a decree published on the Official Gazette early on March 28. 

Cahit Turhan has been replaced by his deputy, Adil Karaismailoğlu, the decree said.

It did not provide a reason for the change or any further details.

Turkey removes tariffs on ethyl alcohol imports

Turkey removed tariffs on ethyl alcohol imports amid coronavirus pandemic, announcing the decision in the Official Gazette on March 25.

The move aims to support production of disinfectant and cologne, traditional ethanol-based scented disinfectant in Turkey.

The tariff on bulk ethyl alcohol imports was 10 percent.

Turkey subjects protective gear to export controls

Turkey has subjected protective products such as masks, goggles, and sterile gloves to export controls, according to a regulation published in the Official Gazette on March 4.  

The move aims to meet domestic demand as the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, continues to spread worldwide, Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan told a press conference in the capital Ankara.
