Under a proposal of the European Commission, Romania will get an 8pct raise in its European budget over the current one, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu said on Monday, emphasising the need for an agreement on the multiannual financial framework before the 2019 elections to the European Parliament.

Romania "cannot afford the luxury of even contemplating leaving the European Union," European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu told a EuroImpact conference on Monday.

Cohesion policy is the guarantee of raising the quality of life for European citizens, with the results being visible also in Romania, which in the period since its EU accession has received European funds of over 45 billion euros for its own development, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu said Friday, ahead of a visit she will pay on Monday and Tuesday to Romania.

Romania and Bulgaria, which are not just neighbours but also friends, share a past that "has contributed to an enhanced degree of empathy" between the two countries, a present characterised by "an in-depth deepened partnership" and "a common European future", Romania's Ambassador to Romania Ion Galea told an interview granted to AGERPRES.

European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu said on Wednesday the EU will fund with 121 million euros a motorway connecting the Aktio peninsula to the Ionia highway, a key transport section serving Western Greece.

The announcement came during a meeting with  Deputy Prime Minister Yiannis Dragasakis, as part of her three-day official visit to Greece.

This section is part of the high-speed railway line between the two largest Bulgarian cities Sofia and Plovdiv from the east / eastern Mediterranean corridor of the TEN-T Trans-European Transport Network.
