Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic told the annual commemoration at Jasenovac on Thursday that the Independent State of Croatia, NDH, a fascist puppet state run by the Ustasa movement and supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, was "one of the most tragic periods in Croatian history".

An excavator removed rubble from the site on Monday morning, forming a contrasting image to billboards still inviting theatre-goers to come and see stage plays.

Croatian officials and representatives of anti-fascist groups and Croatia's Serb, Roma and Jewish communities gathered on Wednesday for the annual commemoration of the victims of Jasenovac, a World War II concentration camp run by the Croatian fascist Ustasa regime.

Man arrested in connection to anti-Roma leaflets

BELGRADE -- The police have arrested a 24-year-odl member of the Serbska Akcija group and fund in his apartment material urging violence and hate speech against the Roma.

BELGRADE - The police have arrested a member of the social group Serb Action with the initials F.G., aged 24, and found in his apartment flyers and posters that call for violence and hate speech against the Roma, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesady.

SYRIZA confirmed on Tuesday, following some two weeks of deliberations, that Thrace-based Roma activist Sabiha Suleiman will not stand as a candidate with the leftist party in the May 25 European Parliament elections.

SYRIZA has opted for Oumit Mestan Osman, a member of the region’s Muslim minority, instead.
