SYRIZA MP Sokratis Famellos announced on Thursday he will run for president of the leftist main opposition party, bringing the number of leadership hopefuls to four.

Former SYRIZA president Stefanos Kasselakis announced on social media Monday that he intends to reclaim leadership of the leftist opposition party in the upcoming election on November 24.

The Central Committee of the SYRIZA Progressive Alliance concluded its sessions yesterday, with the “87” faction emerging as the clear frontrunner, solidifying the framework for the party’s leadership election. Their proposals comfortably dominated the proceedings, setting the course for selecting the new leader of Greece’s main opposition party.

According to the MRB poll presented on Open’s main news broadcast, SYRIZA is ranked as the fifth party, with a single-digit percentage of 9% in the vote estimate. Meanwhile, New Democracy (ND) holds a comfortable lead at 28%, matching its European election result, with a 12.5-point advantage over PASOK, which stands at 15.5%, just 18 days before the party’s internal elections.

The countdown to the election for a new SYRIZA leader has been marred by court threats, verbal assaults, accusations and the presence of the police to maintain the security at party headquarters.

The office, traditionally used by the leader of the opposition, now belongs to the new SYRIZA Parliamentary Leader, Nikos Pappas.

The order to restrict entry was given by Mr. Pappas while he was away in Thessaloniki for official duties.

Former SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis took to social media late on Thursday to condemn "unbelievable provocations - from fake dialogues to fake invitations."
 
Kasselakis' post was published on social media during an emergency meeting of the party's political secretariat and as a small group of people gathered outside SYRIZA headquarters to protest against his removal.
 

SYRIZA's spokesperson Voula Kehagia has resigned from her position in the wake of the ouster of Stefanos Kasselakis as leader of the main opposition party.

Her departure follows that of Evgenia Kountouri, head of the party's press office, and Babis Papadakis, head of Kasselakis' press office, on Monday.

A political contribution text, calling for elections to elect a new leader of SYRIZA from the party members, was submitted shortly before the start of SYRIZA’s Central Committee meeting by the group of 87.
