The Greek stock market had a mixed session on reduced turnover on Wednesday, as the losses posted by bank stocks were more or less offset by gains registered by construction and industrial blue chips, among others.

Unfazed by the International Monetary Fund's pessimistic forecasts for the Greek economy, stocks at Athinon Avenue continued to rally on Tuesday.

The benchmark of the Greek stock market chalked up monthly losses of 4.91 percent at the end of February, after another trading session that saw the majority of stocks head south at Athinon Avenue on Wednesday. However, turnover picked up, with almost a third of the total recorded in the closing auctions.

The Athens stock market appears to have run out of steam in the last few days, with reduced buying interest and lower trading volume, as was the case in Wednesday's mixed session. Mid- and small-caps outperformed, albeit on a significantly lower number of transactions.

Some investors cash in Wednesday's and Thursday's gains as the week drew to a close, but the benchmark at Athinon Avenue remained in the black on Friday, mainly thanks to Coca-Cola HBC and a few other blue chips. However, the credit sector headed south.

Buyers have returned to the Greek bourse, bringing handsome gains for the vast majority of local stocks on Thursday, although the low trading volume suggested this was more likely a case of profit-taking than confidence in Athinon Avenue.

Following the trend set by global markets since late on Tuesday, buyers in Athens took advantage of the benchmark's three-day decline on Wedneday, allowing Greek stocks to recover some lost ground. However, trading volume was considerably lower than in the last few sessions.

The Greek bourse saw stocks head lower on Friday as a result of pressure on international securities markets over the last couple of days. Trading volume was the lowest in the last four sessions.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 875.38 points, shedding 1.25 percent from Thursday's 886.44 points, but on a weekly basis it slipped just 0.31 percent.

A stock rally in the latter half of Thursday's session in Athens saw the benchmark swing back to gains, after a continuation of Wednesday's losses in the morning. Banks enjoyed robust growth, leading trading volume to its highest level this week.
