Mustafa Akıncı, the president of Turkish Cyprus, is scheduled to speak today at a conference organized by the Economic Development Foundation (IKV). 

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Turkish Cyprus Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün have discussed progress in the construction of an undersea electricity cable between the two countries, Özgürgün told state-run Anadolu Agency in an interview on Jan. 3.      

Since Mustafa Akıncı became president of Turkish Cyprus, and efforts to find a federal resolution to the Cyprus problem picked up momentum, each time the ship of talks hit the rocks, the Greek Cypriots managed to get something extra to refloat the vessel.

The recent failed Cypriot peace talks in Switzerland's resort town of Mont Pelerin was the most serious setback in the 19 months of negotiations to find a solution to the more than 40-year-old conflict on the eastern Mediterranean island, the United Nations said Nov. 28.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akıncı called Nov. 2 for "realism and reasonable" approaches from the Greek Cypriots ahead of U.N.-backed talks aimed at reunifying the Mediterranean island.
