Efforts speed up to restore historic Casbah

A UNESCO-listed rabbit warren of 16th-century battlements and Ottoman palaces, the Casbah of the Algerian capital is falling into disrepair, but efforts to save it have been accelerating.

The densely populated district, about a kilometer across, perches above the Bay of Algiers and has been the site of key moments in the North African country's history.

Italy’s Eni pens new Algerian gas deal

Italian energy giant Eni signed a memorandum of understanding on May 26 with Algeria's Sonatrach to boost gas exploration in the north African nation, as Rome seeks to reduce its reliance on Russia.

It was penned during a state visit by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Rome, a few weeks after Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi made his own trip to Algiers.

French soldiers laid to rest in Çanakkale

The remains of 17 French soldiers who lost their lives during the Gallipoli campaign 107 years ago were laid to rest in a ceremony held at the Morto Bay in Çanakkale on April 24.

Only one of the soldiers was identified, but other archaeological finds, such as rings, grave signs, crosses and gravestones, revealed a former French cemetery near the Seddülbahir (Cape Helles) Castle.

Algeria say ready to supply EU with extra gas amid Ukraine crisis

Algeria's state energy firm is ready to supply Europe with more gas in view of a possible decline due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, its CEO said on Feb. 27.

Sonatrach CEO Toufik Hakkar said the firm was ready to pump additional gas to the EU from its surplus via the Transmed pipeline linking Algeria to Italy.
