Hurricane Maria to Become Major Storm Near Caribbean Islands

Maria is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane as it nears the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, reported BBC.

The category one hurricane will rapidly strengthen over the next 48 hours and will hit the islands late on Monday, the US National Hurricane Center says.

It is moving roughly along the same path as Irma, the hurricane that devastated the region this month.

Hurricane Irma leaves devastation in its path

Some six million people are under a hurricane watch including some of the most populated areas in Florida like Miami, Broward County, which is home to Ft. Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. As people in south Florida board up their homes and head north to escape Irma’s wrath, several Caribbean islands are dealing with its aftermath.

Hurricane Irma Causes Devastation in the Caribbean

Hurricane Irma has caused widespread destruction across the Caribbean, reducing buildings to rubble and leaving at least 10 people dead.

The small island of Barbuda is said to be "barely habitable". Officials warn that St Martin is almost destroyed, and the death toll is likely to rise.

Irma is a category five hurricane, the highest possible level.

Hurricane Irma Wreaks Major Damage in Caribbean

Hurricane Irma has destroyed buildings and caused major flooding on several French island territories in the Caribbean.

The four "most solid" buildings on Saint Martin, shared by France and the Netherlands, were destroyed, French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said.
