TOTAL to start drilling off Cyprus on July 14

 

French energy giant TOTAL is expected to start exploratory drilling in block 11 of the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone on July 14.

Block 11 covers some 2,958 square kilometres and the drill site is 150 km off the coast of Cyprus.

Before any exploratory work begins, a 4400-metre diameter area around the site will be explored for objects of archaeological interest.

Tsipras: Greece not being on EU summit agenda 'positive'

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday described the fact that Greece was not on the agenda of talks at a summit of European Union leaders in Brussels as a "positive development."

In comments to reporters at the end of the two-day meeting, Tsipras hailed last week's Eurogroup agreement, declaring that it did not mark the end but the beginning of the road for Greece.

The Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with the Cyprus President Nikos Anastasiades in Brussels on Thursday.

They talked mainly about the draft document of Espen Barth Eide, UN Secretary General Special Adviser on Cyprus, and the coordination of Athens and Nicosia ahead of the Cyprus summit.

Ahead of the June 28 Cyprus conference in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, Greek-Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis Wednesday informed Cypriot political party leaders on the draft common document, regarding security and guarantees, he received earlier in the day from the UN secretary-general's special adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide.

EU, US engagement needed for key Cyprus conference

The Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders, Mustafa Akıncı and Nikos Anastasiades, will meet in Crans-Montana, Switzerland on June 28. The meeting comes after strong pressure from U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Gueterres to hold another conference in order to bring the two parties closer to a breakthrough with the participation of three guarantor countries: Turkey, Greece and the United Kingdom.
