Some 4,650 migrants saved, 28 die trying to reach Italy: Coast guard

More than 4,650 migrants were saved on Oct. 4 and 28 bodies recovered in more than 30 rescue missions off the Libyan coast, Italian Coast Guard said on Oct. 5.

This brings the total rescued in the last 48 hours to more than 10,000 refugees, and the death toll to 50 as people smugglers take advantage of relatively calm weather to push boats to sea.

Thessaloniki Motorcyclist Ilias vrochidis, aged 31, started a journey in July 2013 aimed at exploring Balkan and African countries so as to deliver letters to the families and friends of migrants who have come to Greece. His goal was to raise public awareness on migrant issues.

Experts denounce WHO's slow Ebola response

A U.N.-sponsored independent report by experts denounced May 11 the World Health Organization?s (WHO) slow response to the Ebola crisis.

?It is still unclear to the panel why early warnings approximately from May through to July 2014 did not result in an effective and adequate response,? an interim report by the experts said.

Dignitaries to flock to Gallipoli anniversary

Turkey will host leaders from all corners of the world when it holds commemorations for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli April 24-25.

The heads of state for 20 nations will be in attendance, while two parliament speakers, three vice presidents, five prime ministers and around 20 ministers will also attend the ceremonies.
