Turkish defense minister accuses Greece of violating Libyan continental shelf

Turkey's defense minister Hulusi Akar has presented maps to the Libyan government in a bid to indicate that Greece is trying to encroach upon Libya's continental shelf, according to reports in Turkey's Yeni Safak newspaper.

In its reports, the newspaper accuses Greece of "stealing Libya's EEZ," referring to the country's exclusive economic zone.

Zakynthos quake prompts state of emergency

Authorities in Greece declared a state of emergency on the island of Zakynthos on Saturday, after the strong earthquake that hit the area on Friday.

The general secretariat for civil protection said in a statement the decision was taken to "deal with emergencies and manage the consequences resulting from the earthquake on October 26."

Aftershocks keep Zakynthos on edge

The Geodynamic Institute of Athens said the 6.4-magnitude quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in the sea 50 km from Zakynthos. It was felt as far away as Athens, southern Italy, Albania and Libya.

Greece jolted by powerful quake but virtually unscathed

A powerful earthquake shook western Greece early on Friday, damaging a port and a 15th century monastery, but causing no major injuries, officials and local media said.

The quake sent out tremors felt as far afield as Libya, Italy, Malta and Albania. Greek authorities initially issued a tsunami warning then withdrew the alert.
