Myanmar saw its largest anti-coup protests yet on Feb. 6 with young demonstrators spilling on to the streets to denounce the country's new military regime, despite a nationwide internet blackout aimed at stifling a growing chorus of popular dissent.

India will provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar to fight the coronavirus pandemic, the foreign ministry said on Thursday, as international pressure mounts against Myanmar's military leaders following a coup.

Myanmar's new military government has blocked access to Facebook as resistance to Feb. 1's coup surged amid calls for civil disobedience to protest the ousting of the elected civilian government and its leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Facebook is especially popular in Myanmar and the ousted government had commonly made public announcements on the social media site.

The U.N. envoy for Myanmar urged an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Feb. 2 to ensure that "democracy is expeditiously restored" to the Southeast Asian nation, but the United Nations' most powerful body took no immediate action.

Myanmar's military has seized power after detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected leaders.

In the early hours of Monday, the army's TV station said power had been handed over to commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing.

The United States threatened to reimpose sanctions on Myanmar's generals after they seized power and detained elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose whereabouts remained unknown on Feb. 2 more than 24 hours after her arrest.   

Athens on Monday expressed "deep concern" over developments in Myanmar where the military has seized power after detaining civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior members of her governing party. It also urged the military leadership to respect the will of the people of Myanmar and adhere to democratic norms.

Myanmar's powerful military has taken control of the country in a coup and declared a state of emergency, following the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government leaders in early morning raids on Monday.

Turkey on Feb. 1 "strongly" condemned a coup in Myanmar announced by the Southeast Asian country's military early on Feb. 1.

In a written statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the country was "deeply concerned" by the power grab as "Turkey opposes any kind of military intervention."
