Countries across the world tightened restrictions on their populations on Jan. 2 to fight a resurgence in the coronavirus, as the European Union offered to help drug companies expand vaccine production to improve distribution "bottlenecks".

From local curfews to alcohol bans and complete lockdowns, governments are trying to tackle a surge in cases.

According to data published online on the permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) platform, 21,329 voters cast their vote by mail and 273 exercised their right to the polls, with the total number of voters at 7:00 a.m.

In research published on Monday, Citizen Lab, an Institute of the University of Toronto that specializes in surveillance issues, listed 25 countries and agencies - including Serbia's Security Information Agency - that use the software of the Israeli company Circles, which enables the user to locate every phone in the country in seconds.
