Parliament has passed the Brexit bill, paving the way for the government to trigger Article 50 so the UK can leave the European Union.

Peers backed down over the issue of EU residency rights and a meaningful vote on the final Brexit deal after their objections were overturned by MPs, according to Reuters.

The bill is expected to receive Royal Assent and become law on Tuesday.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on March 13 demanded a new independence referendum to be held in late 2018 or early 2019, once the terms of Britain's exit from the European Union have become clearer.
