Turkey not to allow Nordic country’s NATO bid as long as “terrorists” take part in parliaments: Erdoğan

As long as the "terrorists take part in their parliaments", Turkey will not allow them to enter NATO, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on June 8 elaborating on Sweden and Finland's bid to join the alliance.

President Erdoğan meets Venezuelan counterpart

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has met with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro who arrived in Turkey late on June 7 for an official visit.

The VTV state channel showed footage of Maduro arriving at the airport in Ankara, where he was received by senior officials of Turkey, an important ally of Venezuela.

UN warns of lower growth for Latin America

Economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean will be lower than expected at 1.8 percent this year due to the war in Ukraine, a UN body has said. 

In 2021, the region's gross domestic product (GDP) growth was 6.2 percent, and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in January forecast growth of 2.1 percent for 2022.    

The UN has suspended Russia's participation in the Human Rights Council

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution terminating Russia's participation in the Human Rights Council.

"The UN General Assembly has suspended Russia's participation in the UN Human Rights Council," the statement said.

93 delegations voted in favor of the resolution, 24 against and 58 abstentions.

Former FARC leader killed in Venezuela: Colombian media

A dissident former leader of the FARC guerrillas was shot dead in Venezuela by other rebels, Colombian media reported on Dec. 5.

Citing Colombian and Venezuelan intelligence sources, several newspapers said Hernan Dario Velasquez, nicknamed "El Paisa" ("The Peasant"), had been ambushed in the state of Apure, on the border with Colombia.

Barbados Became a Republic and Declared Rihanna a National Hero

Barbados, which became a republic at midnight and said goodbye to the reign of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, declared the singer Rihanna a national hero, world agencies reported. The decision was announced by Prime Minister Mia Mottley during the lavish celebrations announcing the Barbadian Republic. Rihanna accepted the honor.
