UNESCO condemns ancient houses' destruction in Sanaa 'strike'

UNESCO condemned the destruction on June 12 of ancient houses described as a "jewel" of Islamic urban landscape in an alleged Saudi-led air strike on the Yemeni capital?s old quarter that killed five people.
 
The incident came just ahead of UN-sponsored talks in Geneva in their first bid to break a deadlock after more than two months of Saudi-led air strikes on Yemeni rebels.

Saudi-led warplanes hit UNESCO-listed old Sanaa

An air strike by the Saudi-led coalition on the old quarter of the Yemeni capital killed five people on June 12 and destroyed three houses in the UNESCO-listed heritage site.

UNESCO condemned the air strike on the historical area it described as "one of the world's oldest jewels" of Islamic culture, urging warring parties to respect Yemen's heritage.    

UN pushes for renewed Yemen humanitarian pause

The U.N. Security Council has backed a call by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for a new humanitarian pause to fighting in Yemen, saying peace talks should be held as soon as possible.

The 15-member council said in a unanimous statement June 2 that it was "deeply disappointed" that talks scheduled for Geneva last week were pushed back.
