Bulgaria MPs to Vote on 2016 Budget This Week

A final vote is due this week on Bulgaria's state budget for 2016 and an overhaul of this year's expenditure.

The Budget and Finance Committee with Parliament on Friday is to vote on funding that is to be spent next year. Separately, money allocated to the national healthcare fund NZOK is also to be put to a vote.  

Turkey Gets EUR 3 B, Visa Waiver to Deter EU-Bound Migrants

Turkey is to get some EUR 3 B in funding, visa liberalization with the EU, and the prospect of having membership talks renewed, EU and Turkish leaders have decided at a Sunday summit.

Bulgarian Authorities Detain Syrian Refugees Hidden in Romanian Truck

Bulgarian authorities detained nine Syrian refugees hidden in a Romanian truck in the Pass of the Republic (also known as Hainboaz) in central Bulgaria on Saturday.

Four young men, four women and a one-year-old child were detained after drivers travelling through the pass had informed police that there were immigrants in the truck.

President Nikolic: Biden understands Serbia won't join NATO

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said in Zagreb on Wednesday he will likely visit Croatia again for a bilateral visit in the spring.

Speaking after the Brdo-Brijuni summit, Nikolic said the visit will take place "if there are no early elections (in Croatia)."

 

Another migrant girl washes ashore in western Turkey amid ongoing crossing attempts

The dead body of another young girl has been found washed ashore in the western Turkish province of Ayd?n, amid continued attempts by migrants to cross into European countries from Turkey by sea.

The girl, so far unidentified, was found dead on Nov. 25 after reportedly washing up on the coast of a national park in Ku?adas?, a popular resort district in Ayd?n.

Bulgaria 'Should Accept More Migrants' to Overcome Demographic Crisis

The Bulgarian Academy of Science has suggested the arrival of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa, but also from EU accession countries can be used to tackle the demographic crisis Bulgaria has plundged into.

A report on population trends until 2030 unveiled by the academy on Tuesday reads that some 7200 migrants from the region should be accepted and convinced to stay.

Europol Busts People Smuggling Group Linked to Bulgaria

Eight people have been arrested in a crackdown on a Europe-wide organised crime group suspected of arranging for mainly Albanian nationals to be brought into the EU in breach of immigration law, Europol announced on Tuesday.    

The group, comprised mainly of Czech and Albanian nationals, has been operating since late 2013, Europol said in a press release.

More than one in four children in Europe are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, according to the latest research of the bloc's statistics body, Eurostat, carried out among all 28 EU member states.

More than one in four children in Europe are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, which will have repercussions for them throughout life. On Monday 23 November MEPs debate a report urging EU countries to boost their efforts to combat child poverty and social inequalities. They will then vote on the report the following day.
