Bulgaria Reports Double Increase in Tourist Numbers Ahead of Summer Season

There has been double increase in the number of tourists visiting Bulgaria before the official start of the summer season.

Formally, the summer season on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast begins on June 1, but most hotels have opened to visitors in April. The lower prices are expected to remain until the middle of next month.

Bulgaria's President Pays Tribute to Victims of Communist Rule

No punishment has yet been delivered for crimes committed under Communist rule, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said on Saturday.

Plevneliev attended a ceremony held in memory of victims of the totalitarian regime that held the country in a tight grip between the late 1940s and 1989.

Bulgaria Plans to Refit Two of Its Frigates

The Bulgarian defence ministry is planning to refit two of the frigates currently in service to the navy in order to fully restore their capabilities.

The refitting of Drazki and Verni frigates, both of which used to be in service to the Belgian navy, will be carried at the same time as the acquisition of two new multi-purpose patrol ships.

Turkey sees steepest decline in monthly foreign arrivals since May 1999

The number of foreign arrivals visiting Turkey slumped by 28 percent in April to 1.75 million compared to the same month of 2015, marking the steepest decline since May 1999, according to data issued by the Tourism Ministry on May 27.

Almost half of the foreign arrivals were made by day visitors, the data showed.

Bulgaria's Fibank Repays BGN 1.2 B State Aid

Bulgaria's First Investment Bank (Fibank) has repaid the BGN 1.2 B state aid, which was provided to the bank in June 2014.

The repayment was made in compliance with the plan approved by the European Commission in November 2014. The international rating agency Fitch confirmed the bank's ratings with Stable outlook.

Bulgaria's Services Turnover Index Picks up 8% Y/Y in Q1 2016

The turnover index in Bulgaria's services sector adjusted for the number of workdays rose by 8% year-on-year for the first quarter of 2016, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) announced on Wednesday.

The football club of CSKA Sofia claimed the Bulgarian Cup after defeating the team of Montana in the final played in Sofia on Tuesday.

The only goal was scored by Stanislav Malamov in the twelfth minute.

Bulgaria to Have 146-km Wire Fence along Border with Turkey in 2 Months

In about two months Bulgaria will have a wire fence built along 146 km of the country's border with Turkey, preventing illegal migration flow, Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova has said.

Bachvarova, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev on Saturday inspected the entire length of the fence built so far along Bulgaria's border with Turkey. 

 

Tennis: Bulgaria's Dimitrov Faces Serbia's Troicki in Paris Sunday

Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov will face Serbia's Viktor Troicki in the first round of the 2016 French Open at Rolland Garros in Paris on Sunday afternoon.

Dimitrov enters the tournament unseeded against number 22 Troicki.

Bulgaria's top male tennis player hasn't won a singles title since 2014.
