Greece ends up seventh at FINA World League Europa Cup

Greece earned the seventh spot at the men's 2019 FINA Water Polo World League Europa Cup in Zagreb thanks to its victory over Russia on Sunday, after it missed out on a better place due to losses to Croatia and Serbia.

In Friday's quarterfinals Greece went down to host Croatia 13-11 and on Saturday Greece lost 14-10 to Serbia although it had held the Serbs to an 8-8 half-time result.

The goals were scored by Stefania Vatafu, Cosmina Dusa and Florentina Olar, according to the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) site. On Friday, Romania won the first friendly 2-0, through the goals scored by Ioana Balceanu and Maria Ficzay.

Halep nominated for Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year 2019 award

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has been nominated for Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year 2019 award, which will be presented at the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards scheduled for Monday evening in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Halep is competing with American gymnast Simone Biles, Czech skier Ester Ledecka, German tennis player Angelique Keber and American skier Mikaela Shiffrin.

Croatia receives protest after Serbian athletes are attacked

The protest note concerns an attack on several water polo players from Serbia's Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) club, that happened over the weekend in Split, Croatia.

"The Foreign Ministry has expressed deep concern and disappointment over the attack on the Crvena Zvezda water polo players," a press release said.

Croatia Court Drops Charges Against Luka Modric

Croatia's national football team captain Luka Modric will not be prosecuted for giving false testimony at the trial of the former FC Dinamo chief Zdravko Mamic, the news agency Hina reported on Monday.

"There are not enough grounds for suspicions to raise an indictment against Modric," Kresimir Devcic, a court spokesman, was quoted as saying on Monday.

SOFIA (Reuters) - Slavia Sofia's 42-year-old goalkeeper Georgi Petkov has rejoined the Bulgarian national squad ahead of their UEFA Nations League matches against Cyprus and Norway.

Petkov, who was born in March 1976, last appeared for the Balkan country in a friendly international against Switzerland in February 2009 and has been selected several times since.

 

Croatian footballer named "world's best" by FIFA

The Croatia and Real Madrid footballer was last month declared Europe's best player, and also won the Golden Ball at the World Cup in Russia.

Modric beat Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus to the award - with the latter failing to show up at the event, the Best FIFA Football Awards, held in London on Monday.

Two months after the Croatian national football team became the runners-up at the World Cup in Russia, captain Luka Modric was given the men's player of the year award by FIFA at a ceremony in London on Monday.

The Croatian State Attorney's Office in Osijek, eastern Croatia, on Wednesday filed an indictment against Dejan Lovren, a Croatian football player and Liverpool defender, for giving a false statement during the corruption trial of Zdravko Mamic, the former chief of the Dinamo Zagreb club, and three co-defendants, on September 1, 2017.

Greek triumph at water polo's Youth Europeans

Greece won the European Men's Under-19 Water Polo Championship in Belarus on Sunday, downing Montenegro in the final.

After its amazing triumph with an 8-0 score over Croatia in Saturday's semifinal, Greece overpowered Montenegro with a 14-12 score in Minsk, despite trailing 5-2, to land the gold medal.
