Greek coast guard officer stars in Oscar-nominated documentary
Kyriakos Papadopoulos enlisted in the Hellenic Coast Guard in 1999. Two years on the seas with the Merchant Marine had been enough for the seaman. He wanted to live on dry land and pursue a more tranquil life on his native island of Lesvos. He could not have known what tempests and wrecks the seas of the northeastern Aegean held in store for him, what his mission would one day be.
Helmut Stallaerts | Athens | To March 23
The Bernier/Eliades gallery is hosting Helmut Stallaerts's first solo show in Greece, which runs through March 23. In the show, titled "Ignoramus," the Belgian artist presents nine pieces that explore the human condition and confront the viewer with a dark truth that unhinges our own fictive truths. Opening hours are Tuesdays to Fridays from 10.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.
Turkey's Nasreddin Hodja enthralls Greek audiences
Turkey's Nasreddin Hodja -- a unique and entertaining character from Turkish folklore -- has found a new home in an unlikely setting: Greece.
At a special storytelling event in Athens recently, stories of the Hodja -- a kind of a mixture of fool and wise man -- were read out by husband and wife team Panagiotis Kokkoris and Turkey-born Gözde Atalay-Kokkoris.

Nitra Gallery launches its Athens annex with a solo exhibition by Turkish conceptual artist Ardan Ozmenoglu at 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 26. The show, "What's the Time in Istanbul," touches upon the themes of identity and national self-understanding and is inspired by the volatile situation in Turkey following last year's failed coup.

Mr. Stathis Eustathiadis, the doyen of Greek journalism, one of the last of the old guard who took the profession as a serious passion, died in Athens at the age of 92. For many journalists who met him and worked with him in his long professional life, he was an example that many of us know that we could not surpass.
