Parliament set to pass same-sex marriage bill

Parliament is poised to vote the same-sex marriage bill, with the help of three center-left and left-wing opposition parties.

Passage of the bill will bestow full parental rights upon same-sex couples, although it would not allow male partners to have children born in Greece through surrogacy.

The country that blazed a trail for same-sex weddings

Marriage equality was a matter of debate as early as 1960 in the Netherlands. It became law in 2001. At the time, the country was the first in the world to legalize marriage for same-sex couples. "Some people had predicted that society would fall apart and family values would suffer. None of that has happened," the Dutch ambassador to Greece, Susanna Terstal, tells Kathimerini.

Migrants hidden in truck stopped in Igoumenitsa

Greek authorities have apprehended two undocumented migrants from Iraq, aged 23 and 26, in the northwestern port of Igoumenitsa as they attempted to travel to Italy concealed within a freight truck. 

Additionally, a 52-year-old suspected smuggler, also from Iraq, has been detained in connection with the same incident.

Protest against private universities underway in Athens

Students and teachers rallied in central Athens on Thursday to protest against the establishment of private universities in Greece.

Despite the rain, protesters gathered at Propylaia and are expected to mark towards the Parliament. 

Government sets up task force to tackle juvenile violence

The government set up a scientific committee as part of the national strategy of countering violence among minors, the Prime Minister's office announced on Wednesday.

The task force is composed of eight members, among which are a criminologist, a legal experts, professors of political science, and cyber security, and a child psychotherapist.

40 migrants found on Gavdos beach

Forty irregular migrants who landed on the beach of Trypiti on the island of Gavdos, south of Crete, were found by the coast guard on Tuesday. 

They were scheduled to be transported to Sfakia, on Crete's southern coast, on Wednesday. 

According to local reports, the boat had sailed from Egypt. There was no information available regarding their health condition.
