Greek deflation slows in October

Greece's headline consumer price index fell by 0.5 percent year-on-year last month, with the annual pace of deflation slowing from -1.0 percent in September, Hellenic Statistical Authority data showed on Thursday.

Seven drug arrests made in two separate cases

Police at Athens International Airport confiscated 3 kilograms of cocaine from the luggage of a 33-year-old man who arrived in Greece on Thursday on a flight from Sao Paolo via Zurich.

The drugs had been concealed in four packages in the outer casing of his suitcase, police sources said.

Traffic stop leads to crackdown on forgery workshop

Police found document forging paraphernalia in a car in Nafpaktos, western Greece, on Thursday, and arrested two men, aged 64 and 44.

The pair were reportedly stopped by local traffic police for a routine check.

A search of the car yielded civil service seals, forged IDs and machines to make fake documents.

Stournaras to Reuters: Reducing Greece’s debt vital for growth

The governor of the Bank of Greece, Yiannis Stournaras, told Reuters in an interview today that there would be a gradual easing of capital controls, but that full liberalization would depend on progress with respect to Greece’s debt relief, which is also a precondition for entering the ECB’s asset buying scheme.

Greek unemployment rises to 23.4 pct in August

Greece's jobless rate rose to 23.4 percent in August from an upwardly revised 23.3 percent in the previous month, statistics agency ELSTAT said on Thursday.

The number of officially unemployed reached 1.126 million people. Hardest hit were young people aged 15 to 24 years, with their jobless rate dropping to 46.5 percent from 48.3 percent in the same month a year earlier.

Greece Rocked by 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake

A 4.8-strong earthquake has hit the north of Greece, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre has said.

The quake's epicenter was at a depth of 10km and located 12 km north-east of Polykastron.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damaged buildings.

BGNES wire service reports the quake was also felt throughout southwestern Bulgaria.
