Extreme weather leaves disaster in its path (videos+photos)
Extreme weather phenomena have left disaster in their wake, with tornadoes, heavy rains and winds uprooting trees and causing floods throughout the country. A tornado hit the area of Lehena and Vartholomio causing many cars to overturn and many trees to be uprooted. The road network is closed. The tornado left nothing but destruction, when it hit the area from Vartholomio up until Lehena.
Djangofest | Athens | September 20-21
The seventh edition of the Djangofest is scheduled to take place at the Technopolis Cultural Complex in central Athens on September 20 and 21. The event celebrates gypsy jazz with live music performances, seminars, workshops, screenings and interactive games for children, among others. Doors open at 5.30 p.m. and admission is free of charge.
Joint Bulgarian-Greek Units To Patrol Borders with Turkey
As of the end of September, joint Bulgarian-Greek units will patrol the Bulgarian-Greek and Bulgarian-Turkish borders against the illegal traffic of refugees. In the current situation, there are sections along the Bulgarian-Greek and Bulgarian-Turkish borders which are not secured physically and are being used for the trafficking of migrants.
More bad weather expected, EMY warns
Greece's National Meteorological Service (EMY) on Thursday warned of more bad weather, two days after heavy rains caused flash floods in several parts of the country, including the Peloponnese and northern Greece. Four people died in Messinia, in the Peloponnese, while one woman was still missing on Thursday in the Thermaikos Gulf in Thessaloniki.
Greek unemployment rate drops to 23.4 percent in June
Greece's unemployment rate dropped to 23.4 percent in June, compared to 24.9 percent in June 2015, the Hellenic Statistical Authority, ELSTAT, announced on Thursday.
According to the agency, the number of employed came to 3.674.957 people, while the number of unemployed stood at 1.124.541. Those considered to be inactive came to 3.249.057.
Tsipras to Le Monde: Without debt relief Greece cannot exit crisis
In an interview to French newspaper ‘Le Monde’, Greek PM Alexis Tsipras warned that the EU was on the brink of disintegration, if the EU failed to present solutions to the problem of unemployment. A day before the meeting of the Mediterranean countries in Athens, Tsipras stressed that the economic situation would gradually show signs of improvement.
More refugees, migrants arrive on Greek islands
Over one hundred refugees and migrants have entered Greece by sea over the past 24 hours, the Athens-Macedonian news agency said on Thursday. According to the agency, 106 people reached islands in the northern Aegean.
The number of identified migrants and refugees in Greece on Thursday stood at 59,694 people, the agency added.
Greece, Bulgaria to jointly patrol borders
Greek and Bulgarian police are to start joint patrols along the Greek-Bulgarian and Bulgarian-Turkish borders in a bid to prevent undocumented migrants from continuing their journeys via the so-called Balkan Route.
Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas discussed the matter with Bulgaria's Interior Minister Rumiana Bachvarova during a recent visit to Sofia.

A fine slapped on Greece by the European Court of Justice Wednesday over the country's inadequate management of hazardous waste constitutes a certificate of incompetence - even more than the penalty itself.
