Macedonian troops fire stun grenades at migrants on border

Macedonian special police forces have fired stun grenades to disperse thousands of migrants stuck on a no-man's land with Greece, a day after Macedonia declared a state of emergency on its borders to deal with a massive influx of migrants heading north to Europe.

Macedonia Declares Crisis on Border Over Refugees

Macedonia said it was deploying troops on the border with Greece, in a last-ditch move to stem to flow of refugees into and across the country.

The aim was to enhance control of the border area, Ivo Kotevski, spokesperson of the Ministry for Interior, explained on Thursday.

Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic says Serbia will not build a wall along the border with Macedonia to stem the tide of migrants crossing into the country.

Serbia will also not build migrant camps on its territory, he told the Belgrade-based daily Danas.

Serbia has so far registered 83,000 migrants and 500 of them applied for asylum in the country, UNHCR representative in Serbia Hans Schodder said on Tuesday.

Turkish Authorities Detain 293 Illegal Immigrants at Border with Bulgaria

The Turkish gendarmerie in the border town of Kirklareli detained 293 illegal immigrants in the past five days.

The refugees were uncovered near the Bulgarian-Turkish border in the forest next to the town of Demirkoy from where they intended to cross into Bulgaria and other European countries.

Migrant hit by train dies, 3 arrested in separate incident

A migrant injured in an accident on the Tabanovci-Kumanovo railway in Macedonia has died, the Interior Ministry in Skopje has said.

The victim passed away on the way to the emergency medical center in Skopje.

Hungary plans to extend anti-migrant campaign to Serbia

The Hungarian government has announced it will "extend its anti-migration campaign to countries like Greece, Macedonia and Serbia," AP has reported.

These are "transit points used by the more than 120,000 migrants who have entered Hungary this year," the government in Budapest said on Thursday.

About 1,000 migrants from the Middle East were early on Friday waiting in Gevgelija to continue their journey to Serbia, and then to the EU.

Several hundred of them, mostly refugees from Syria, were spending the night next to the railway tracks at the rail station in this town near the Macedonia-Greece border.
