Following a two-month political crisis over who should run the capital city, Montenegro's Social Democratic Party, SDP, which is led by the speaker of parliament, Ranko Krivokapic, has asked the opposition parties to support the formation of a provisional "technical" government.

SDP-DPS Feud Escalates

On arrival in Skopje on Monday, UN mediator Matthew Nimetz said he was bringing no new proposal on his two-day visit, but rather old ideas that were worth considering further.

“I don’t have a new proposal but I have some things in my head," Nimetz told reporters.

A massive storm caused record rainfall in Montenegro on Sunday night, sparking severe flooding, particularly in coastal areas and the capital Podgorica, with further heavy downpours predicted. 

Police and marine security officers saved about 40 tourists, mostly Russians, from beaches in Budva, Bar and Kotor after they were trapped by strong winds and high waves. 

The new five-star hotel, Regent Porto Montenegro, is due to open on Friday in the coastal town of Tivat as the country seeks to attract more wealthy tourists.

The hotel, situated at the centre of the Porto Montenegro marina at a former naval base in Boka Bay, is managed by Taiwanese company Regent, which runs a chain of hotels around the world.
