Udovicic: Serbia to intensify fight against match fixing

BELGRADE - Serbian Minister of Youth and Sports Vanja Udovicic said on Friday that the amendments to the Law on Sports would expand the mandate of the National Council for the Prevention of Violence and Misbehavior at Sport Events to cover the prevention of match fixing.

TOKYO - Serbia's top-ranked female tennis player Ana Ivanovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo after beating Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday.

Ivanovic took a 3-0 lead in both sets, and broke her opponent's serve twice before winning the second set.

Jovanovski loses opener in Guangzhou

GUANGZHOU - Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski lost her first round match at Guangzhou International Women's Open to Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday.

Jovanovski was visibly tired from the last week's tournament in Tashkent, where she was dethroned by Italy's Karin Knapp in straight sets on Sunday.

Belgraders welcome medal-winning Serbian athletes

BELGRADE - A crowd of more than 20,000 people gathered in Belgrade late Monday to welcome the Serbian men's basketball team, which won the silver medal on Sunday at the World Cup in Spain.

Also welcomed were the women's shooting team, which won the gold medal at the World Championships in Granada, as well as world wrestling champion Davor Stefanek.
