Impairments, provisions continue to raise banks’ profit
Ljubljana – Banks in Slovenia generated a pre-tax profit of EUR 372.5 million in the first nine months of 2021, down 10.5% compared to the same period last year, when re-tax profit benefited from a merger of two banks. Profit was relatively high, but mainly due to the net released impairments and provisions, the central bank said on Tuesday.
Famed Swiss organ unveiled in Koper cathedral
Koper – The Koper cathedral will inaugurate its new organ at Saturday’s mass, which is to be attended by Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia Jean-Marie Speich and President Borut Pahor. The organ, which came from the famous Tonhalle concert hall in Zurich, is the second largest in Slovenia and will sound in a concert for the first time in the country on Sunday.
Festival of Slovenian Film opening in Portorož
Portorož – The 24th Festival of Slovenian Film will open in the coastal town of Portorož on Tuesday with the screening of Inventura, a film by Darko Sink. Until Sunday, a total of 54 films will compete for the festival’s awards.
Minister Jaklitsch visits Wisconsin and Illinois
Milwaukee – Minister for Slovenians Abroad Helena Jaklitsch is wrapping up her multi-day tour of the Slovenian communities in the United States by meeting Americans of Slovenian descent in Illinois, after she visited on Friday the federal state of Wisconsin, a home to around 6,500 people of Slovenian descent.
Production based on Jančar’s award-winning novel premieres in Maribor
Maribor – A major international production, I Saw Her That Night, based on the novel by Drago Jančar and directed by Janez Pipan, will open at the Slovenian National Theatre (SNG) Maribor on Friday. The show was produced in cooperation with the Vienna Burgtheater, the Yugoslavian Drama Theatre and Ljubljana’s Cankarjev Dom.
Slovenia submits Sanremo for nomination in Oscars race
Ljubljana – After a successful international festival run and an announced distribution on three continents, Sanremo by Miroslav Mandić has been selected by a group of experts as the Slovenian entry for a nomination for the best international feature film award at the Oscars 2022, announced the Slovenian Association of Filmmakers.
Innovator and sound engineer Emilija Soklič wins Badjura award
Ljubljana – The recipient of this year’s Badjura Award, given out for lifetime achievements in film since 1995, is the innovator and film sound engineer Emilija Soklič, one of the first Slovenian professional female film industry workers. She will receive the award at the opening of the 24th Slovenian Film Festival on 12 October.
Dostoevsky, Jančar and Berlin Philharmonic to headline new season at Cankarjev Dom
Ljubljana – A guest appearance by the Berlin Philharmonic, a series of events marking the 200th anniversary of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky and a production based on Drago Jančar’s award-winning novel will be among the highlights of the new season of Cankarjev Dom, Slovenia’s biggest cultural venue.
