French biathletes win single mixed relay in Pokljuka

Pokljuka – France’s Antonin Guigonnat and Julia Simon are the winners of Thursday’s single mixed relay event as part of the Biathlon World Championships in Slovenia’s Pokljuka. The Slovenian pair of Jakov Fak and Polona Klemenčič were 13th.

The silver medal went to Johannes Thingnes Boe and Tiril Eckhoff of Norway, and Sweden’s Sebastian Samuelsson and Hanna Öberg won bronze.

Ski jumper Nika Križnar bags World Cup victory in Rasnov

Rasnov – Nika Križnar, Slovenian’s best female ski jumper this winter, won a World Cup event in Rasnov, Romania on Thursday in what is the second World Cup victory in her career. She is now also in the lead in overall rankings.

New York – Slovenian NBA basketball player Luka Dončić and sport climber Janja Garnbret have made US magazine TIME’s list of 100 rising stars for 2021, Time 100 Next. The 21-year-olds are featured in the Phenoms category of rising stars in sports.

WTA tournament returning to Portorož after ten years

Ljubljana – A tournament of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) series is returning to Slovenia, as the national federation has been successful in bidding to host a US$125,000 prize money tournament for ladies in the seaside resort of Portorož between 13 and 19 September.

Zakopane – Slovenian ski jumper Anže Lanišek won his third podium position this season as he finished second on the large hill in Zakopane, Poland on Sunday, less than three points behind Halvor Egner Granerud of Norway.

Pokljuka – Sweden’s Martin Ponsiluoma won the men’s sprint at the Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka on Friday in what was a surprising finish at the first individual event. Second and third places went to France’s Simon Desthieux and Emilen Jacquelin, respectively.

Ljubljana – The Slovenian Football Association (NZS) and four Slovenian cities that will co-host the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship with Hungary are finishing their preparations for what will be largest football event in Slovenia so far, heard an online debate on Thursday. Pokljuka – Competitions at the 2021 Biathlon World Championships will start on the Alpine plateau of Pokljuka on Wednesday in what is the biggest winter sports event in Slovenia so far. Running until 21 February, the event will feature 337 competitors from 38 countries.

Ski jumps: Double victory for Slovenian female team in Austria

Linz – Slovenia celebrated a double victory at the Women’s Ski Jumping World Cup in Austria’s Hinzenbach on Friday. Nika Križnar bagged her first World Cup victory with 237.4 points, followed by Ema Klinec with 236.6 points. Third place went to Norwegian Eirin Maria Kvandal (226.6 points).

Slovenian biathletes to shoot for medals in Pokljuka

Ljubljana – The Biathlon World Championships 2021 starts next week in Slovenia’s Pokljuka in what will be the biggest winter sports event in the country so far. Slovenian biathletes have their eyes set on the medals, Janez Ožbolt of the Slovenian Ski Association said ahead of the tournament.

Romanian-French pair Mihaela Buzarnescu / Alize Cornet qualified on Tuesday for the quarterfinals of the doubles event of the Gippsland Trophy (WTA 500) tennis tournament in Melbourne, with total prizes of 565,530 dollars, by defeating Hayley Carter (USA) / Luisa Stefani (Brazil) 6-3, 6-1. Buzarnescu and Cornet won in only 55 minutes versus the 6th seeds.
