Govt endorses accords with several countries on joint border patrols

Ljubljana – The government has endorsed technical agreements with Poland, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on joint patrols and other forms of joint action to manage illegal migration on Slovenia’s border with Croatia.

Demand for new workers growing after spring lockdown

Ljubljana, 12 August – There were more than 20,500 job vacancies in Slovenia in the second quarter of the year, up almost 25% from the first quarter, with demand for workers strongest in hospitality and in culture and entertainment. The country’s vacancy rate thus rose to a quarterly record of 2.6%, the Statistics Office (SURS) said on Thursday.

Slovenia confirms 248 infections on Wednesday

Ljubljana – Another 248 people tested positive for coronavirus in Slovenia on Wednesday after 1,828 PCR tests were performed for a positivity rate of 13.6%. The cumulative 14-day incidence per 100,000 residents increased by seven to 88 and an estimate of active cases in the country rose to 1,900, show fresh official data.

DEM starts construction of new solar power plant SE of Maribor

Maribor – Dravske Elektrarne Maribor (DEM) will launch next week construction of a new solar power plant adjacent to the Zlatoličje Hydro Power Plant, some 20 kilometres south-east of Maribor. Almost 6,000 photovoltaic modules are planned to be installed, with total rated output of 2.7 MWp expected to produce 3,000 MWh of electricity annually.

Coronavirus case count hits 248 on Tuesday

Ljubljana – Slovenia saw as many as 248 people test positive for coronavirus on Tuesday, an increase of nearly 80% from the same day a week ago, fresh figures from the National Institute of Public Health show.

Of the 1,974 PCR tests performed yesterday, 12.6% came back positive, as a total of 19,126 rapid antigen tests were taken.

Epidemic cut sales, profit of Pivovarna Laško Union in 2020

Ljubljana/Laško – Pivovarna Laško Union, Slovenia’s largest brewery, last year generated EUR 145.6 million in net sales revenue, up 6.9% year-on-year, with the company attributing the drop to the Covid-19 epidemic. Net profit decreased by 31.5% to EUR 16.7 million, shows the annual report published on Wednesday.

Hops in Savinja Valley severely damaged by Sunday hail

Tabor/Žalec – Sunday’s hail storms have wreaked havoc in the Savinja Valley damaging around 80% of the hops grown in the area, meaning this year’s harvest will be rather poor. Roman Žveglič, president of the Slovenian Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry (KGZS), visited the area on Tuesday, saying the chamber will call on the government for aid.

Ljubljana – Slovenian NBA star player Luka Dončić has signed a five-year, US$207 million supermax rookie extension with the Dallas Mavericks in what is the largest guaranteed rookie extension in NBA history and the largest sports contract ever in Slovenia. New group of firefighters heading for N Macedonia
