Coal phaseout strategy sent into public consultation
Ljubljana, 15 March – The Infrastructure Ministry has launched a public consultation on the draft national strategy to phase out coal and restructure the country’s two coal regions. The document applies to Savinja-Šalek, which has coal-fired power station TEŠ and a coal mine, and to Zasavje, where there are no longer any active mines or thermal plants.

Ljubljana – The Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) has presented a statement on reconciliation, underlining that Slovenians must reach an consensus about basic values on which the nations is founded. Eurostat: Slovenia saw the biggest rise in domestic tourism in 2020
Luxembourg – In 2020 when tourism was hit by the coronavirus pandemic, Slovenia posted the highest rise in the number of nights generated by domestic tourists in the EU, that of 33%. The other two countries that also saw a rise in domestic nights last year were Malta and Cyprus (both up 15%), show figures Eurostat released on Monday.

Slovenian Covid-19 victims commemorated by senior officials
Ljubljana – Senior state and religious officials attended a memorial service at Ljubljana’s Žale cemetery on Sunday for people who have died from Covid-19, on the anniversary of the first death recorded in Slovenia. In his keynote, President Borut Pahor express condolences to the victim’s families and said the virus had not been defeated yet.
Slovenian, Croatian football legends raise money for Petrinja
Ljubljana – Slovenian and Croatian football legends played a charity match on Saturday in the Croatian town of Petrinja to raise funds for the area that was hit by a devastating earthquake at the end of last year. The Croatian Red Cross was handed out a donation of EUR 50,000, the Slovenian Football Association (NZS) said.
Janša says SDS will not allow soloing in coalition any longer
Ljubljana – Democrats (SDS) president and Prime Minister Janez Janša has announced in a letter to the party membership that the party will work in realising the commitments from the coalition agreement, and he expects the same from partners. Five PMs, including Janša, urge EU summit on vaccines
Brussels/Vienna – Five EU prime ministers, including Slovenia’s Janez Janša, have addressed a letter to Brussels calling for a summit on Covid-19 vaccines. The call comes after Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz strongly criticised the distribution of vaccines among EU member states, saying some EU countries were receiving more vaccines than others.
Slovenia wins five Golden City Gate gold awards in tourism promotion
Ljubljana – The Slovenian Tourism Board (STO) received four gold and three silver awards in this year’s Golden City Gate international competition, which celebrates excellence in promotional campaigns and features. Another gold award went to the Slovenian western region of Posočje.
The award ceremony was part of the international ITB Berlin Now travel trade show.
