Minister Kustec urges joint EU crisis response in sports
Ljubljana – Minister of Education, Science and Sport Simona Kustec joined her EU counterparts in charge of sports as they supported the survival of the European model of sports, both popular and top competitive sports, in a virtual meeting on Tuesday. Kustec also called for a common approach to the organisation of sports events during the coronavirus pandemic.
Debate hears optimism for renewed transatlantic relations
Ljubljana – There are high hopes for relaunching transatlantic relations after Joe Biden’s win in the US presidential election, a debate held by the European Parliament Information Office in Slovenia heard on Tuesday. Participants said that respect for human rights, the rule of law and liberal democracy was again becoming key on both sides of the Atlantic.
Eleven innovations receive Golden Awards from GZS
Ljubljana – Eleven innovations received top awards from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GZS) as part of Innovation Day on Monday. The online ceremony was also addressed by President Borut Pahor, who labelled the economy and the creative sector two pillars of social development, with the key to progress lying in their cooperation.
Slovenia qualify for 2022 EuroBasket in Ljubljana “bubble”
Ljubljana – The Slovenian men’s basketball team has qualified for the 2022 Eurobasket with wins against Ukraine and Austria in a mini “bubble” tournament held in Ljubljana’s Stožice Arena as part of the qualifying Group F. Slovenia will thus be defending their gold medal from the previous European championship in 2017.
C-bank says Q3 growth expected, new drop projected for last quarter
The central bank commented on the noticeable increase in Slovenia’s GDP in the third quarter on the quarterly basis by saying that the rebound was expectedly strong following the relaxation of coronavirus measures. It has meanwhile warned that a drop in economic growth is to be expected in the final part of the year.
Innovation Day calls for cooperation between economy, creative sector
Ljubljana – There is a lot of untapped potential for cooperation between the Slovenian economy and the culture and creative sectors, Economy Minister Zdravko Počivalšek said at an on-line debate held as part of Innovation Day on Monday. The opening addresses highlighted the importance of creativity and innovation in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Slag as innovative solution for sports infrastructure
Ljubljana- The steel maker SIJ will be joining forces with the Slovenian Olympic Committee in putting its by-product, slag, to good use in the construction of sustainable pump tracks. The project is in line with the principles of circular economy and will also reduce the use of natural resources, the Olympic Committee said on Monday.
Slovenia’s GDP down by 2.6% y/y in third quarter
Ljubljana – Slovenia’s gross domestic product (GDP) was down 2.6% year-on-year in real terms in the third quarter, the Statistics Office reported on Monday. In seasonally-adjusted terms, GDP was up 12.4% compared to the quarter before while dropping 2.9% year-on-year.
In the first nine months of the year, Slovenia’s economy shrunk by 6% compared to the same period in 2019.
