Galatasaray in tough Ankara test
The 15th week of Turkey's top football division, the Spor Toto Super League, is set to kick off Dec. 26 with the highly anticipated match between Gençlerbirliği and Galatasaray in Ankara, as the race heats up both at the top and the bottom of the standings.
The match will begin at 8 p.m. local time.
Turkish center Furkan Aldemir makes NBA debut
Turkish center Furkan Aldemir, who joined the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers on Dec. 15, made his debut for his new team hours after signing a contract.
Aldemir logged 10 minutes in the Sixers' 105-87 home loss to the Boston Celtics, scoring two points, dishing out an assist and grabbing two offensive rebounds.
Crvena Zvezda loses to Olympiacos in Athens
ATHENS - Crvena Zvezda lost to home team Olympiakos 64-59 (13-16, 14-12, 15-20, 22-11) in a Group D Round 9 match of the Regular Season phase of the 2014-15 Euroleague basketball tournament in Athens late on Friday.
The Serbian team suffered their fourth defeat in the group last night, while Olympiakos stands on top with eighth victories.
Red Star, Galatasaray Punished for Fan’s Murder
Euroleague's disciplinary judge has sanctioned both Serbia's Red Star and Turkey's Galatasaray for "the incidents generated by their fans and the failure to adopt measures to avoid disturbances" ahead of the match in Istanbul on November 21.
Basketball coach Aleksandar Petrovic dies
BELGRADE - Famous basketball coach Aleksandar Petrovic died on Monday at the age of 56 after a long disease.
Petrovic was born in Pozega on October 14, 1959 and during his career, he coached Belgrade-based Radnicki, Hemofarm, FMP, Lokomotiv - Rostov, UNICS, Zalgiris and Azovmash.
Galatasaray appoints former player as new coach
Galatasaray appointed its former midfielder and current Turkey assistant coach Hamza Hamzaoğlu as its new coach Dec. 1 after parting ways with Italian Cesare Prandelli last week. The Istanbul club has accumulated just one point from five games in the Champions League after losing 2-0 to Anderlecht, guaranteeing it will finish last in the group and miss out on a Europa League place.
