Turkey’s ‘Giants’ to meet Lithuania after Aussie miracle

Turkey will face Lithuania in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup quarterfinals Sept. 9, after a dramatic victory over Australia.

Fenerbahçe Ülker forward Emir Preldzic nailed two late three-pointers, including one that he landed five seconds left in the play, to cap a stunning 65-64 comeback victory over Australia in the round of 16 game on Sept. 7.

Turkish tennis player claims title with partner in junior girls’ doubles at US Open

Turkish tennis player İpek Soylu and Jil Belen Teichmann of Switzerland defeated Vera Lapko of Belarus and Teresa Mihalikova of Slovakia to claim the title in the Junior Girls’ Doubles Final in the U.S. Open on Sept. 6.

Soylu and Teichmann defeated their rivals 5-7, 6-2, (10-7) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Ankara to host diplomats’ tennis tournament

The fifth annual Embassy Tennis Tournament will be held on Sept. 13-14 and Sept. 20-21 at the Ankara Tennis Club, with a total of 30 ambassadors displaying their skills on the tennis court, rather than on the negotiating table.

Turkey beats Dominican Republic, set to face Australia in last 16

Turkey took second in Group C at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup after a 77-64 win over third placed Dominican Republic with Oğuz Savaş leading the way with 15 points. 

The Turkish national team will face Australia in the last 16, who were beaten by Angola 91-83 but gave a rest to two of their top players, Joe Ingles and Aron Baynes.

Young Ozan Tufan scored a long-range shot in stoppage time to give Turkey a 2-1 win over Denmark in an international friendly game in Odense on Sept. 3.

Bursaspor’s 19-year-old midfielder scored from about 30 meters in the second minute of additional time, giving Turkey victory in only his fourth international appearance.

Turkey loses to Ukraine in Basketball World Cup

Turkish national men’s basketball team dug itself a hole with a 64-58 defeat to Ukraine in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup on Sept. 2.

With the defeat, Turkey fell to 1-2 after three games, while Ukraine improved to 2-1.

Turkey failed to stop Ukraine’s sharpshooters, Ihor Zayitsev and Olexandr Mishula, whose combined 31 points and late shots were crucial.

Turkish national basketball team started the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in fussy style after beating New Zealand 76-73 in Group C game in the Spanish city of Bilbao on Aug. 30.

Serbia wins European championship

TARTU - Serbia's junior women's volleyball team beat Slovenia 3-2 (25-23 17-25 24-26 25-17 15-12) in the final of the European championship in Estonia and Finland on Sunday and became the European champions.

This was Serbia's fourth attempt at the title, since they lost the finals in 2004, 2010 and 2012.
