Protecting EU borders not turning out well, says Merkel referring to Greece

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Saturday for better protection at the extrenal borders of European Union so as to maintain the Schengen zone.

“We need to protect our external borders because we want to keep Schengen,” Mrs. Merkel said in her weekly podcast adding that if EU fails to protect its external borders, the free movement of people would be jeopardized.

US calls for immediate halt to Russian airstrikes in Syria

Russian airstrikes in Syria should be halted, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Feb. 5, adding that humanitarian access talks are ongoing.

"Russia is using what are called free-fall bombs - dumb bombs," he told reporters at the State Department. "They are not precision bombs, and there are civilians, including women and children, being killed in large numbers as a consequence."

Magnitude-3.0 Earthquake Shakes Bulgaria's Smolyan Region

An earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale has been registered, in southern Bulgaria close to the border with Turkey, at 16:44 local time on Friday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) announced.

The epicenter was located 153 km southeast of Sofia, 32 km north of Smolyan city and 2 km northwest of the town of Luki, at a depth of 5 km, the EMSC said.
