Turkish academics released after detention for 'terrorist propaganda'

Some 24 academics who signed a petition calling for an end to military operations in southeast Turkey were released late on Jan. 15 after being detained for a short period by police in the northwestern provinces of Kocaeli and Bolu.

Kemal K?l?çdaro?lu was re-elected as chair of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) for his fourth consecutive term at his the party's convention over the weekend, saying he aimed to renew the CHP's management with "more new and young faces." 

Ara Güler biopic set for US premiere at Washington Film Festival

"The Eye of Istanbul," a feature-length documentary film on the life and works of legendary Turkish-Armenian photographer Ara Güler, has been nominated for the Washington Film Festival. 

The movie was chosen as a finalist in the official selection of the Washington D.C. Independent Film Festival, the oldest independent film festival in the U.S.

Crystal Cruises cancels stops in Turkey over security issues

Crystal Cruises announced on Jan. 15 that it was canceling stops in Turkey for two upcoming voyages. The company said in a statement that it was canceling visits to Istanbul and the Aegean district of Ku?adas?, which had been planned stops for one of its ships, Crystal Symphony.

The cruise line said it was rerouting the ship "in response to ongoing security concerns."

Police officer and soldier killed in southeastern town

One police officer was killed on Jan. 16 after being injured in clashes between security forces and outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in the Sur district of Diyarbak?r, southeast Turkey.

The 35-year-old officer, Ali Bulduk, died at the Diyarbak?r Military Hospital and his body was sent to the southern province of Adana for his funeral.

Science Academy concerned over freedom of expression

Science Academy, a Turkish NGO, said in a written statement that it is concerned over the reactions to a recent petition by some 1,128 academics and detentions that came after, saying that blocking ideas would result in intellectual, social and economic standstill.

British envoy expresses concern over detention of academics

British Ambassador to Turkey Richard Moore underlined the importance of freedom of expression in a democratic society and especially in education and expressed concern over the investigation carried out against academics who issued a declaration on ongoing operations in the Southeast.
