Bill being prepared for labor, pension loose ends

The Labor Ministry is expected to table a bill toward the end of the month that aims to tie up a number of loose ends related to labor and pension legislation.

The draft law will not be linked to any commitments Greece has as part of its bailout agreement with its international lenders ahead of the next program review, which is due to begin the autumn.

US alliance with YPG 'creates ground for terror organizations,' says Turkish FM Çavuşoğlu

The partnership between the United States and the People's Protection Units (YPG) in the fight against jihadists in northern Syria is "creating the ground for other terror organizations in the region," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has said, reiterating Ankara's expectation that Raqqa will be handed to the control of local Arabs after its liberation. 

Istanbul's Bosphorus closed to naval traffic due to rescue works

Istanbul's Bosphorus Strait was closed to marine traffic on Aug. 10 for a research and rescue effort to reach a man who had been missing since last month.

17-year-old Furkan Yıldırım who had gone for a swim in Istanbul's Bosphorus, went missing after getting caught in a drift on July 15.  

Rescue teams have been searching for Yıldırım's body since early in the morning.

Istanbul's Bosphorus Strait was closed to naval traffic for eight hours on Aug. 10 amid search and rescue efforts for a man who has been missing since last month. 

Furkan Yıldırım, 17, went missing after going for a swim off the Arnavutköy neighborhood on the city's European side on July 15.

ENI set to start hydrocarbon exploration in November

 

Italian energy giant ENI is expected to start three hydrocarbon exploratory wells in blocks three, six and eight in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on November 1.

The well in block 6 is a joint venture with French energy concern TOTAL and is in an area hotly contested by Turkey.

Nine journalists detained over ByLock use in Istanbul

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office on Aug. 10 issued detention warrants for a total of 35 journalists and media workers over allegedly using the smartphone application ByLock, used almost exclusively by the followers of the U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen.

Innovative technology developed by Cypriot scientist Dr Yiannis Ieropoulos that uses urine to provide electrical energy was widely used at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

The technology which uses urine-fed Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) was used to power the festival’s giant screens.

After region, earthquakes reported in two Serbian towns

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake was on Wednesday evening felt in the town of Pancevo, northeast of Belgrade.

A short while later another earthquake, of 3.6 magnitude, affected Vrsac, a town located further northeast, near the border with Romania.

Turkey on Aug. 9 criticized "baseless" allegations from the Greek Foreign Ministry regarding commemoration events in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on Aug. 8, marking the 53rd anniversary of the Erenköy Resistance. 

Turkish sprinter wins silver at World Athletics Championships

Yasmani Copello Escobar of Turkey won silver in the men's 400 meter hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in London on Aug. 9, giving his country its first medal at this year's competition.        

Escobar finished in a time of 48.49 seconds, behind Norway's Karsten Warholm who took gold in 48.35 seconds.        

Ministry: Serbia not importing eggs from Netherlands

Serbia has not been importing eggs from the Netherlands and citizens need not be concerned, Beta was told by the Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday.

This comes after the Dutch authorities announced that they shut down farms after finding high concentrations of Fipronil, an insecticide banned due to its negative effects on human health.
