Russia Accuses US of Plotting ‘Coloured Revolution’ in Moldova

The head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin, has accused the United States of preparing a Ukraine-style "coloured revolution" in the former Soviet republic of Moldova, where the pro-Russian President, Igor Dodon, faces an election challenge from a pro-Western rival.

"The Americans are preparing a 'revolutionary' scenario for Moldova, which in November this year will elect a president. They are not satisfied with the current head of state, Igor Dodon, who maintains constructive relations with the CIS countries, including Russia," Nariskin said.

He added that the US was continuing to interfere in the internal affairs of other states friendly to Moscow along the perimeter of its borders, accusing Washington also of being behind recent political agitation in Belarus and Kyrgyzstan.

A recent joint investigation carried out by the Dossier Centre in Moscow and the investigative Moldovan NGO, RISE Moldova, showed that Russian advisors with close connections to the Kremlin were working with Dodon's staff to ensure he wins the presidential election.

The Dossier Centre, close to exiled Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, has also revealed links between Dodon and a Russian Federal Security Service FSB general, Mikhail Chernov, and their exchanges of information and correspondence.

The investigation said President Dodon has coordinated many of his positions and his current campaign for re-election with a so-called "Department for Moldova" operating in the Kremlin.

It said Dodon had asked help from Moscow to develop his speeches and strategies in relation to the rest of the world. Dodon's staff have dismissed the allegations as a fake news campaign.
