Gov’t plans to discuss changes in electoral law with parties, says minister

The Turkish government is planning to discuss some "essential changes" in the country's electoral law with all political parties, Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül said on June 15.

Speaking in an interview with state-run Anadolu Agency, Gül said that the government is approaching all issues by thinking how the matter will affect democracy, the rule of law and the nation's common will.

In what was viewed as another display of nationalistic rhetoric aimed at a domestic audience on Thursday, Turkey announced its intention to proceed with drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, while a university rector and the head of an organization linked to the ruling AK Party set their sights on 12 Greek islands, Western Thrace and parts of Crete.

Erdoğan vows more mayors from opposition will join AKP

President and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed that more mayors from the opposition parties will join the AKP after five district governors joined the ruling party on Jan. 14.

"Five new mayors have joined the AK Party. I believe this figure will increase in the coming weeks," Erdoğan told a meeting with the AKP mayors in Ankara.

Erdogan threatens to send Syrian refugees to Europe

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday Ankara will send the 3.6 million Syrian refugees in Turkey to Europe if European countries label the country's military incursion in Syria as an occupation.

"We will open the gates and send 3.6 million refugees your way," Erdogan said in speech to lawmakers from his AK Party. [Reuters]
