In a surprise decision, Albania's High Court has freed Arben Nroka and Pjerin Ndreu, MPs for the ruling Socialist Party, of charges of beating Genc Strazimiri, an MP from the opposition Democratic Party on July 14, 2014.

After 25 years of debate on the subject, Albania's parliament last week approved a law that partially lifts the veil of secrecy on Communist-era secret service files, creating a commission to handle requests for information.

A bill introduced into Albania's parliament by the opposition MP and former minister Majlinda Bregu is expected to stir a stiff debate on freedom of expression in the country.

The draft law aims to put an end to derogatory and offensive comments by users on online portals, holding their administrators accountable for any infringement of the law.

Luiza Xhuvani resigned from Albania's parliament on Tuesday evening following the arrest of her son in connection with the killing of four people in a Tirana nightclub shoot-out.

"He is my son. Those who are parents will understand me. I feel the pain of the families of these four lost lives. I give my resignation as MP," Xhuvani, a well known actress, said.

A group of Roma organizations on Wednesday presented Albania's parliament with a proposed amendment to the law on the legalization and urbanization of illegal construction, which would protect Roma camps from forced evictions.
