Heavy rains trigger floods, leaving one dead in Antalya

Heavy downpours overnight in the Mediterranean province of Antalya have led to widespread flooding, resulting in the death of one resident in the Kepez district.

The deluge, intensifying during the night, caused water accumulation on roads, making it challenging for both pedestrians and vehicles to move. Some rural neighborhoods witnessed flooding in homes and businesses.

2.4 million tourists visit Antalya in five months

More than 2.4 million foreign tourists visited Antalya in January-May, marking a strong 223 percent increase from a year ago, despite the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

In May alone, foreign tourist arrivals in the province, on the Mediterranean coast, lept 297 percent from a year ago to nearly 1.2 million people, according to data provided by the Antalya Governor's Office.

Antalya welcomes 9 million holidaymakers

Antalya, on Turkey's Mediterranean's coast and which is very popular with local and international holidaymakers, attracted a total of 8.9 million foreign tourists between January and November this year.

This marked a staggering 163 percent increase from the same period of 2020 when the city hosted around 3.4 million international visitors.
