Appeals Court in Belgrade

Former Serbian State Security Unit for Special Operations, commander Milorad "Legija" Ulemek, refused to answer questions about the murder of Serbian journalist Slavko Curuvija at the Belgrade Court of Appeal.

Legija told the court that he stands by his 2014 statement from the investigation and his 2016 statement from the first trial.

Former head of Serbian State Security Radomir Markovic repeated to the appeal court that he is not guilty for the 1999 murder of the Serbian journalist and editor Slavko Curuvija.

Markovic claimed that Curuvija was only put under state surveillance "due to his contacts with foreign intelligence agencies …The task of every state security is to establish the nature of these contacts".

The Appeals Court in Belgrade announced on Thursday that it has handed down a second-instance verdict sentencing Husein Mujanovic to four-and-a-half years in prison for abusing Serbs who were held at a Bosnian Army military prison in Hrasnica near Sarajevo during 1992.

Miroljub Vujovic, a Serb wartime fighter who was convicted in Serbia of participating in killing some 200 prisoners from the Croatian town of Vukovar at the nearby Ovcara Farm in November 1991, has been granted early release based on the Belgrade Appeals Court's conclusion that his "resocialisation" is complete.

The Appeals Court in Belgrade on Tuesday upheld Dalibor Krstovic's appeal and quashed the first-instance verdict convicting him of raping a female Bosniak prisoner while she was being detained at an elementary school in the Bosnian town of Kalinovik during the war in August 1992.

The Appeals Court in Belgrade told BIRN that it has partially upheld an appeal from former Bosnian Serb Army soldier Dragomir Kezunovic and given him a lower sentence of five years in prison for crimes committed during the Bosnian war.

The War Crimes Section of the Higher Court in Belgrade has granted a request by the Bosnian Justice Ministry to recognise a verdict from the Bosnian state court convicting former military policeman Dragomir Kezunovic of committing crimes against humanity during the Bosnian war.

The Appeals Court in Belgrade has quashed the verdict convicting Husein Mujanovic, the commander of a military prison in Hrasnica near Sarajevo during the Bosnian war, of the abuse of Bosnian Serb inmates in 1992, and ordered a retrial.

Mujanovic had been sentenced to ten years in prison in July 2020.

The Appeals Court in Belgrade has sentenced two former Bosnian Serb Army military policeman, Dragan Bajic and Marko Paukovic, to 12 years in prison each for killing five Bosniak civilians in the village of Kamicak in the north-wesern Kljuc municipality of Bosnia and Herzegovina in October 1992.

A new report by the Humanitarian Law Centre NGO in Belgrade, published on Wednesday, said war crimes proceedings in Serbia are subject to long delays and that justice is being further postponed when retrials are held.
