Amid rising tensions, court rejects third appeal by Ankara for officers' extradition

At a time of increasing tensions between Greece and Turkey an Athens court on Friday rejected as "groundless" the third appeal by Ankara for the extradition of eight Turkish servicemen who fled to Greece following the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey. 

Golden Dawn MP convicted of attempting to assault Athens mayor

A lawmaker of the extreme right Golden Dawn party was handed a four month suspended jail sentence on Monday for attempting to physically assault Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis in 2013.

An Athens court found Giorgos Germenis guilty of verbally abusing and trying to assault Kaminis during an event hosted by the Athens municipality on May 2, 2013 in the capital.

Suspected members of far-right group testify

Four out of the 11 suspected members of far-right group Combat 18 Hellas were released on Friday after defending themselves before an investigating magistrate on charges of possession of fire arms and drugs.

The other seven suspects, who face more serious charges, including running a criminal organization and arson, are to face the same magistrate on Saturday.

Court ruling paves way for liquidation of Skaramangas shipyards

An Athens court has approved an appeal by the Greek state and Piraeus Bank to prepare the Skaramangas shipyards for liquidation.

As long as there are no objections from the key shareholder Privinvest, which is far from certain, the government will be able to start auctioning the shipyard's assets via an international competition.

Extradition ruling put off

An Athens court on Tuesday postponed a ruling on an extradition request for the second of nine Turkish Kurds whom Ankara accuses of terrorist offenses.

The court decided to adjourn until March 6 in order to gather more information about Naci Ozpolat, 48, who testified on Tuesday along with four witnesses.

Greece insists on environmental fines on gold mining firm

Greece's Environment Ministry has appealed a court decision annulling a 1.7-million-euro ($2.06 million) fine it had slapped on mining firm Eldorado Gold. 

In a statement Friday, the ministry said the Athens court ruling did not dispute the findings of an environmental inspection at two of the Canadian company's sites in northern Greece.
