Bosnian Army

A decision by the Sarajevo Cantonal Assembly to name one of the streets in the Novi Grad municipality after a Hague Tribunal defendant, deceased Bosnian Army general Mehmed Alagic has been criticised by survivors of the 1992-95 war, international organisations and rights activists.

The Bosnian state prosecution filed an indictment this week charging ten people with committing a war crime in Sarajevo on May 3, 1992, when a Yugoslav People's Army military convoy was withdrawing from the capital.

The appeals chamber of the Bosnian state court on Thursday sentenced the former commander of the Third Corps of the Bosnian Army, Sakib Mahmuljin to a combined sentence of eight years for war crimes in the Vozuca and Zavidovici areas in 1995.

Prosecutor Dusan Knezevic on Thursday asked Belgrade Higher Court to hand down a six-year prison sentence to Osman Osmanovic, who is accused of abusing civilians and prisoners of war at the Rasadnik camp in Gornji Rahic in Bosnia and Herzegovina's Brcko area during the summer of 1992.

The Bosnian state court convicted Mehmed Alesevic, a former military police officer with the Bosnian Army's 505th Buzim Brigade, of seriously abusing civilian detainees during the army's conflict with the forces of the separatist Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia statelet during wartime.

Judge Davorin Jukic told a hearing on Wednesday that the Bosnian state court has confirmed an indictment charging Dzevad Avdicevic, Ahmed Hadzajlic, Muharem Efendic and Izet Ikanovic, as commanding officers and servicemen of the Bosnian Army, with committing crimes against prisoners of war in the area of Teocak during 1993.

Sarajevo mayor Benjamina Karic, accompanied by the top international official in Bosnia and Herzegovina, High Representative Christian Schmidt, and the vice-president of the Federation entity, Milan Dunovic, unveiled the new memorial on Monday and laid flowers next to the Kazani pit where the remains of those killed in 1992 and 1993 were found.

Sarajevo City Council on Wednesday voted to erect a monument to the mostly ethnic Serb civilian victims of the wartime Kazani Pit killings, but rejected a proposal by the Nasa Stranka party to name their killers on the inscription.

A defence witness told the war crime trial of wartime fighter Osman Osmanovic at Belgrade Higher Court on Monday that he was held at the jail where the defendant allegedly assaulted prisoners in the Brcko area of Bosnia and Herzegovina but did not see any prisoners being beaten or tortured while he was there.
