Bulgarian Parliament Committee Moves to Address Deficits at Power Company NEK

A Bulgarian Parliament commitee has adopted changes to the Energy Act meant to reduce chronic financial deficits at the state-owned National Electricity Company NEK.  

The changes approved on second and final reading by the Energy Committee on Monday call for the creation of a Electricity System Security Fund, according to BGNES.

Bulgarian Parliament to Elect New Central Bank Governor on July 14

The Bulgarian Parliament will elect the new governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) on July 14.

Bulgarian MPs decided on Friday to hold the hearing of the four candidates at an extraordinary sitting on July 14, daily Dnevnik reports.

The resignation of incumbent governor Ivan Iskrov, which had been announced in June, entered into force on Friday.

The budget and finance committee with the Bulgarian Parliament is due to hold on Thursday hearings of candidates to take over as Governors of the country's central bank.

This comes a day before lawmakers are due to point a successor to Ivan Iskrov, who stepped down in June a few months before his term had expired.

New Referendum Law Reviewed in Bulgarian Parliament

Bulgarians will now be able to vote on referendums. This is one of the prescriptions of the new law amendment to be reviewed in Parliament Wednesday.

The legislative commission to Bulgarian Parliament approved the proposals for change at end July and now the text will be further reviewed by MPs for the second time.

Bulgarian Parliament Passes Labor Code Amendments

Bulgarian Parliament has approved the one day labor contracts specifically for seasonal agricultural work.

The amendments to the Labor Code are set to improve the registration of short-term seasonal work. However, the time worked under such a contract will not count towards one's labor experience, but employees will be able to get their full insurances.

Bulgarian Parliament to Hold Hearing of Energy Watchdog over Electricity Prices

The Bulgarian Parliament will start its work on Wednesday by holding a hearing of the Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (KEVR) on its proposed model for electricity prices from July 1.

The reason for the hearing is the discontent of business and industry representatives, which are protesting against the planned 20 % increase of electricity prices in the sector.

Parliament Speaker Calls for Joint Schengen Accession of Bulgaria, Romania

Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva called for the joint accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen Area, which will ensure a higher degree of security for the EU.

Tsacheva stated this during her meeting with the President of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Zgonea on Monday.
